They need an account to track your stats and achievements as a player. They didn't code for a generic player. Could be laziness. Could be there was some technical problem and this was the only solution.
I doubt it was the only solution. Do you really think professional programmers can't work out how to say "Hey, don't bother with trophies for the second player who isn't signed into anything'?
