Only my Icebreaker, but in a big way (Destiny)

I find my Icebreaker will not only shoot through it but actively destroy the shield with Solar burn, and sometimes without. Does the shield have a health meter? Or is it the explosion-on-death triggering (much like Bad Juju's String of Curses procs on Knight Shields) that destroys it?

This also happens in Crota's End during the Ir Yut fight (which I solo'd last night. Painful), but seemingly nowhere else.
