The easiest way to get Legendary Gear is to rank up one of the factions and buy it from them, or get an Exotic or two from Xur. Keep on going, the Raid is easily the most fun thing in the game, well worth participating in. (And it annoys the hell out of you at the same time.)

Also, I would recommend that you NOT rep a faction until you get to level 3 Vanguard rep. The reason is that you can gain Vanguard marks quicker and more reliably and that's the currency you'll need to buy your legendary armor.

At level 2 Vanguard rep you can buy armor which is what you need to level up, and as soon as you get to level 3 you'll get a "free" legendary weapon from the Vanguard and at that point you can buy any other weapon from the Vanguard Quartermaster for 150 marks. Once you're at Vanguard level 3 feel free to rep a faction.

One other thing, do NOT use your marks for weapons until you have a full set of legendary armor. Priority number 1 is getting that armor.
