The value of the "We messed up" tour (Destiny)

Superficially, the Marathon video seemed more candid and honest, while the Destiny video was very much two people reading a script.

Superficially yes. But the old Bungie vidocs at least felt completely earnest that the people in them loved the hell out of their game, were so excited by it, and were genuinely looking forward to having you play it. They were sharing the excitement, and not necessarily trying to convince me. (I am aware they were marketing videos first and foremost, but both things can be true).

The Marathon video seemed like someone just trying to convince me the new enemies that they are making are really cool. They are trying to sell it to us before it seems like they have been themselves convinced.

We know Destiny was a mess on launch, but the excitement in the vidocs felt completely real and was more or less correctly placed since the game had genuinely kick ass elements and game modes. I'm not feeling it with Marathon.

It's gonna take a brain transplant to save this patient.
