We are coming up on over 20 years of shooters (Gaming)

I think the old style shooters with weapons, ammunition and health littered around the map are done. Older gamers like myself have played them to death and are tired of the limited strategies they offer.

The newer games allow you either customization of your player beforehand to suit your skills (al la Destiny/Halo/Titanfall/COD) or are team based (Overwatch, Team Fortress).

This puts the emphasis on knowing your loadout in relationship to your opponents and positioning yourself to the best advantage. Destiny still tries to promote movement with the ammo spawns, which I appreciate. Other games can quickly devolve into camp fests without objectives or a reason to leave your preferred location.

That rarely happened in the older style games. I got really good with the default weapons in Halo mostly because my teammates always hogged the power weapons (ineffectively I might add). You also had to be very observant about what weapons a person was carrying because that was the only difference in characters, and there was a whole strategy of hiding your other equipped weapon to lure people in.

You also had the issue where if you won the first encounter, you were pretty much doomed in the second unless you could find a health pack. The regenerating health mechanic that is now ubiquitous was really an outstanding innovation. It keeps people engaged, but still limits the encounter times.
