Stars usually collapse without forming black holes, and do so when their core becomes iron, as it takes more energy to fuse iron than you get from the reaction. The core of old, dead stars is literally iron.

My current go-to interpretation of that is "the answer" makes one reminisce about what once was. A sense of loss of something's former glory? Like an ancient Mercurian civilization that is no longer? ;)
