A Little Bit of Happy. A Good Bit of Sad. (Destiny)

by Ragashingo ⌂, Official DBO Cryptarch, Friday, May 08, 2015, 06:52 (3742 days ago)

After a couple of week running around cloaked as a stealthy Bladedancer assassin I've swapped back to being a Gunslinger and it's so nice. Battles and situations I would lose I am winning with flaming throwing knives. Situations that would require me to blade dance through a ton of enemy fire I handle from a distance with Golden Gun. It just kinda amazes me at how differently but equally good a class in Destiny can play.

On a sad note, my CD player in my car came back around to my Top Played 2013 disc and when "Law of the Jungle" and "Eighth" played I no longer heard the mysteries and excitement and wonder of a new game. I did not even hear the hope of things to come. Mainly, I heard the drowned out echoes of my past expectations. Expectations that were not met. Destiny is still fun to play, those two tracks are still beautiful and iconic and will forever stick with me as the music that defines the game because they were the first we got to hear... But now they also remind me that I hoped for a much bigger story and a more dynamic universe whose mysteries would be revealed in the game... but weren't. It was such a gut bittersweet feeling to have the those tracks rekindle hope of a new Bungie universe yet at the same time remind me of what didn't happen and what wasn't achieved. :(

Meh. I don't like being sad. Perhaps I'll go listen to the Truth and Reconciliation Suite to cheer myself back up. :)

This resonated with me. For months I used to wake up to "Eighth." After you know what happened I couldn't do it anymore.

A Little Bit of Happy. A Good Bit of Sad. - OOF!

...ran face-first into a potent wall of melancholia.

I am exactly where you are - I have largely enjoyed Destiny, but oh, what might have been.

At least it's Friday?

Not much could live up to the hype

It is true Bungie delivered something less then the hype. I was expecting something along the lines of multiplayer sci-fi Skyrim or an open world ME3.

What I got is something completely different. Still good, but I was looking forward to having my progression form a storybook like that early concept picture.

Dangit, now I have the sads

Yeah, my expectations from the Law of the Jungle trailer were so much bigger. I mean, this is BUNGIE, and the mystery and lore just isn't there in the same way. You can see fingerprints of it, and gestures towards what, I assume, they wanted to create but ultimately didn't.

I'm excited about HoW, but I know even it won't live up to what I was hoping Destiny would be. All I have to do is hear the voice of the PoE's narrator and I can sense the divergence. This might be the first Bungie voice actor I can't take seriously (I think Dinklebot works 50% of the time).

That being said, I know I will have fun. Destiny has delivered on the Fun in spades and I look forward to that. I just wish we'd have something fun to debate like "the last time you asked me...."

Very similar experience with the music

I had been playing Destiny almost exclusively with the sound turned way down. I like to farm and run activities while I watch videos or listen to music, it helps mix it up a bit for me.

I recently turned the sound back up for a Raid and forgot to turn it back down. Then I was sitting idle in the tower when the Destiny themes kicked in. It really transported me back to playing my way through the story and helped remind me of the tone of those story missions. Unfortunately it reminded me how hollow that felt without story meat to back up that tone, but it definitely resonated with me.

I was not disappointed with this game.

I kept up to date with the trailers and the features and things. I was astonished in ways I didn't expect. The coop is usually rock solid. The gameplay is more fun than I ever thought a game could be, and, for the first time since the original Halo, I have had fun just sitting in a game and fucking around.

Where Destiny didn't grab me was, of course, its story, but I'm not upset with it. I never expected any story. I didn't expect something like Marathon or Halo. I had no expectations. The closest thing was that I hoped it would be as fun as Halo with the replayability of Borderlands and that was fulfilled and more.

The music reminds me of Marty...and that's too bad. But otherwise, it reminds me of playing the beta and having tons of fun with my friends.

I know how you feel, and I'm sorry.

I may be the last person you'd expect to say this, but the great thing about the future is that is always has potential. Hopefully some of that potential is realized in HoW.
