Probably for the best. Easily scratched and stolen discs maybe wasn't our finest technological feat of all time...


Actually, the Compact Disc is a pretty remarkable invention. The idea of using lasers (lasers!) in a consumer product a couple years before I was born is kind of crazy to me.

And you say "easily scratched," but a CD has a fair amount of redundancy built-in (for Red Book, it was 8 bytes of error correction data for every 24 bytes of actual data), which means it was a frak ton more reliable than other media of the day. Remember broken tapes clogging your player? Yeah, that was fun.

They could have 8 yottabytes of error correction and it wouldn't help them not get stolen...
