Nightfalls after nightfalls (Destiny)

by Kahzgul, Monday, March 16, 2015, 13:39 (3794 days ago)

How many of you have done the nightfall strike multiple times in a week, voluntarily, after you already had your rewards?

The only time I can think of is the first time it was triple burn. That was super fun, but also I only had one character who could do nightfalls at that time.

Now I have three characters, and I don't even do the nightfall 3 times most weeks because UGH.

As I see it, this is a major problem with the game. The activities, for the most part, aren't fun enough to want to play through without the promise of a sweet reward at the end.

Asking another way: If you knew you'd get nothing, would you even bother with Nightfalls?

I play Nightfalls because they sound like a fun change of pace. But I only do them probably once a month.

To answer your question no. And here is the reason: Lack of in game matchmaking options. If my friends arent online I am forced to use 3rd party sites such as DBO or destinyteamfinder.com in order to get a group together. that means i have to go get my laptop. keep advertising on the site or create event. Its not that bad on DBO because you can set a time/place. But when I am not always sure when I can play I rely more on teamfinder. So basically I have a good chance of getting a crap group, or spend 15 mins or more just waiting. I barely want to do it because of the rewards!

I liked to solo run them after I'd already done them.

19 times out of 20, I don't get anything (useful) from the nightfalls anyway. They're fun when I'm able to run them with friends, but since I usually miss the DBO nightfall group runs, I end up going the LFG route, and that usually sucks. I'm actually thinking of skipping them completely this week so I can focus exclusively on Iron Banner. At least that way I have specific concrete items I can work towards and purchase once I reach the required levels.

I reserve the right to change my mind about this (Speedracer's description of two teams racing sounded fun) but I rarely want to do the same activity twice in one day. That's my rule (that I sometimes break).

I actually care more about coins, so I'm more likely to run the weekly heroic multiple times, but again, I try not to do them on the same day. I'm more likely to break this rule on Saturday, when I need something from Xur that I can't yet afford.

I replayed it this week, because I saw Stuntmutt doing it alone so I joined to help. That's really the only reason I would do it again, to help a friend.

by Earendil, Monday, March 16, 2015, 14:14 (3794 days ago) @ Kahzgul

I usually do the nightfall with friends on one or sometimes both of my characters. Sometimes I end up running it once or twice solo if friends aren't online at the beginning of the week. However, if later in the week someone wants to do a nightfall and I'm already online, I'll join them. I've done that a few times and find it no less fun than doing it for rewards. Unless we're going after Valus Ta'aurc. @##$% that guy.

That said, I'm also one of those guys that actually likes strikes. So sue me :)

Last week I ran 3 nightfalls and 3 weeklies with mower tues morning. Then I ran both again with m33ka and squatch tues night. I think I got both in with oholiab and junior as well on Tuesday. Wednesday I ran doubles with the chicken family and last night again with relekh. So in total I ran winters run 15 times this week. I enjoy playing with others, helping out where I can and I learn a new strategy often every once and a while. I never find this game tedious playing with others.

Yes, and I often do. I find I enjoy the nightfalls more than any other activity except maybe raids (raids are potentially more fun but also potentially more stressful depending on how well the group gels). I've been known to run them several times just to help someone else get it done. If possible, I will of course switch to a character that hasn't done it yet, but this past week I made a couple of runs with others even after I had run out of characters. I think multi-burns are the most fun so this week is a good one for me.

Yeah, I run them to help friends quite often, but I meant - with my original question - how often do you run them purely for the enjoyment of running them? So like, no friends getting loot etc. Would you ever run them just for fun? I know that - aside from that first 3x burn, I wouldn't.

I play the Nightfalls way more than I would any other game's modes. yes, I do it for the rewards, but I rarely just redo levels unless I have a friend or brother who really wants to do some sort of "campaign" style play.

Same questions as for ChrisThreeCrappy then:

What (aside from helping friends get rewards - because that's still a reward and doesn't qualify) draws you to re-running the nightfalls? What's your favorite one so far? What's your best argument for repeating them? Convince me!

Clarification: Re: Repeating to help someone else

by Kahzgul, Monday, March 16, 2015, 15:51 (3794 days ago) @ Kahzgul

If you're only running them again to help someone else get a reward, that's still a "reward" for doing the nightfall. I'm more curious about when you re-run them and no one involved is getting a reward. IE: it's purely for the joy of it. Why? What's your favorite? What's so fun about it?

Personally, I don't enjoy them and only do them to either get rewards for myself or to help others get rewards, but I can only think of the one situations (triple burns) when I actually had fun running them. Convince me I'm wrong!

hmmm

by ChrisTheeCrappy, Monday, March 16, 2015, 16:51 (3794 days ago) @ Kahzgul

Yea I generally won't. But I also have limited time working 50 weeks that I tend to go towards rewards (playing with friends counts as a reward). I would love to do them solo sometimes after, but just isn't worth it. Maybe if I at least got the rep, I would do it since 5 runs = full 2500 rep!

What (aside from helping friends get rewards - because that's still a reward and doesn't qualify) draws you to re-running the nightfalls?

Uh, I like shooting things in the face? Seriously, that's it. Nightfall is a chance for me to feel super-powerful due to the burns. I could just play the strikes at their default low level for a similar effect, but burns accomplish this while also keep me from striding across the battlefield like an all-powerful god-man.

FWIW, the last couple of weeks I've been more eager to run Nightfalls than usual because I've only recently acquired my very first elemental primary, Praedyth's Timepiece (I don't raid very much). I got it just early enough to have it fully upgraded in time for last week's Nightfall.

What's your favorite one so far?

Anything with multi-burn. Failing that, the best ones (in my view) are when the burn is enhancing the adds more than the main boss. The main boss always does big damage so a burn doesn't change much - suddenly having to be concerned about shanks changes things up more.

What's your best argument for repeating them? Convince me!

No point in trying. You like what you like. Nothing wrong with that. I can explain my own fun all day long but I don't really expect it to change your mind.

In short, yes

by Earendil, Monday, March 16, 2015, 17:00 (3794 days ago) @ Kahzgul

You're the player I was looking for!

I told my mom I'd be valued for this some day!

What draws you to replaying them?

I really enjoy plowing through challenging NPCs. At level 32 and no way to raise the difficulty, Nightfalls are the only challenge without making up my own rules (like no guns). Someday Bungie will release a strike that involves cresting a hill on a large plane, and seeing hundreds of hive in the valley below, followed shortly after by their charging up the hill at me, and I'll be the happiest guardian ever.

I'm also the kind of player that likes playing smart. Where "playing smart" is my way of saying I'm not the most aggressive player. When the enemy is easy, my team mates will aggressively charge in and kill everything while me and my scout rifle get little action. When the enemy is strong I come into my element. When the enemy is strong, flanking and position become far more important, and using the 3 bullets you get to fire as effectively as possible before ducking/diving for cover again.

What's been your favorite?

Favorite strike? In order

Will of Crota
[large gap]
Winter's Run
The Nexus
Devil's Lair
The Summoning Pits
Cerberus Vae III
(on XB1, so no PS strikes)

I also tend to prefer strikes where the "boss" is less of a boss fight, and more something that you pick at when you have a chance. For example Omni Gul on Will Of Crota is a real plow through enemies - hit her hard - retreat - repeat. I like that. I like that far more than say hitting Valus for minutes at a time, and then being moderately distracted by minor enemies. The Summing Pits also feels this way. Part of the problem with either of those though is that it's impossible, no matter how smart you play, to keep from getting flanked without cheesing.

I should say add that "playing smart" should not translate to the desire to cheese (though let's be honest, if I were using my own real life, I'd cheese the @#$%$ out of the enemy all day long). No, while I like the distance game, I like it infinitely more when my skill at distance keeps me from dying as the enemy attempts to close the distance. So the end of The Nexus, I don't enjoy sitting up top and sniping everything, because the enemy doesn't have a chance. There is never any fear. I much prefer the feeling that I need 5 consecutive head shots on 5 enemies or they will close in too tight. And in the Nexus, you better clear themall because you're going to need to flip 180 and do it again in exactly 4 seconds.

What's your most compelling argument for running them again? Convince me!

Because they are fun :)
I don't tend to have the flexibility or time to commit to Raids, (total raid count is maybe 10 times) so strikes are also where I get my team play in. This, all day long. I'm most often convinced when I'm asked to help finish one, or when I see that I can jump in with someone. I'm usually capable of soloing them with my warlock, which is a very different experience than a team of Guardians.

Bounties or helping friends are the only time I'll redo them. The grind is too real for everything else in the game to waste my precious time doing something without a reward.

How many of you have done the nightfall strike multiple times in a week, voluntarily, after you already had your rewards?

Not me. The entire point of running Nightfalls has been to get a Hawkmoon. If I ever get one, I have zero reason to do a nightfall other than to help someone else.

Strikes are somewhat boring for their own sake, even with burns and the mods.

Eh, in that case...

by Monochron, Monday, March 16, 2015, 20:26 (3793 days ago) @ Kahzgul

I almost never do that for any game I am playing. I may do full playthroughs of a game over again, but I practically never do individual levels or activities just for fun. It's kind of a 'get the whole experience' or nothing thing for me.

However, in things like racing games I gladly would play them again because to me it feels like the whole purpose is nothing but fluff fun. I guess that's a bit odd, but if I know that all I'm going to get out of it is fluff fun ( like playing Mario Kart for instance), then I'll probably play it every now and again just for fun. But for games where that is not the purpose . . . I'm oddly not interested.

I don't like to play when there's almost no chance for a reward. VOG is almost rewardless (I have all weapons), but at least it still gives a couple exotic chances.
