So yeah, I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you completely about the whole one hundred hours thing. Progression based games are specifically designed to tap into particular psychological rewards (achievement, getting ahead, social recognition and status). This is why you can end up playing a loot treadmill game for hours on end, even if you're not having "fun". What you crave is the psychological reward of the progression.

Good games will allow you to have fun while at the same time getting that sense of achievement or social recognition (World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, maybe grudgingly Diablo 3 at this point).

Not so good progression games end up feeling like a bad relationship that you just can't quit because you don't want to give up the sex. They aren't having fun, but they can't quit the psychological rewards that they crave. Coincidentally this is a big reason why World of Warcrack can be so hard to quit for a lot of people.

*Ding* "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" "Grats!" ... ahhhhhh yessss, social recognition, that hits the spot.
