Vex discovery? (Destiny)

I'm a bit fuzzy on the details of this event...
Were the Vex only discovered during the events of the game/slightly before? Or has the Vanguard known about them for longer?
I know Dinklebot tells us the Vex turned Mercury into a machine in days, but it's not said whether that's common knowledge, or if he got it from the Vex network.
