I also wouldn't fault those reviews, MS deciding to position it as their big fall AAA marketing title led to a lot of blowback when the product is decidedly smaller than what that would imply.
I felt like that was reflected in the response / opinion of ODST by the more casual Halo audience too.

Yes. It's another datapoint to add to the thesis that expectations distort review scores. Sometimes, maybe even often, games are better (or worse) than their review scores.
