1000xRESIST (Gaming)
I finished 1000xRESIST a few nights ago. I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's been a long time since a game has stuck with me in this way.
1000xRESIST is a narrative game. Gameplay mostly just consists of walking through environments, exploring details, talking to people, taking in the world around you. Some very, very light puzzle elements exist, but they're hardly worth mentioning. That's not to say the act of playing isn't enjoyable--this isn't Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. Movement feels good (and even has a sort of point to point flying mechanic in some areas that's cool even for how simple it is), but walking around is really about all you "do."
Where this game really shines is in it's narrative and presentation. Every chapter and area has a different vibe, expressed through camera angles, color, and lighting, and I can't think of another game that does it quite so effectively. The voice acting is also stellar, with some incredible writing that is stuck in my brain.
I don't even want to talk about the story in any real way, as my main enjoyment of the game came from the joy of just unraveling what was happening from moment to moment. It's a story of memories, history (and the revision of that history), finding a place for yourself, parenting, love, community, revolution and political violence, regret, forgiveness.
If you've ever liked narrative games like Life is Strange, What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home, etc, please play 1000xRESIST. I don't want to oversell it, but it is a truly incredible and unique experience. I finished it and immediately started it again to experience it with the full context of what I know, and it might be even more impactful the second time. This is a game I'll be thinking about for a long time, I suspect.
