GuardianCon is player-run. BungieCon will (presumably) be Bungie-run. Different goals, different potential pools of interested attendees.

I thought I heard guardian con changed its name and decided to not be focused on Destiny (which, to me, is another way of saying they ended Guardian con, but…).
