I forget the exact rules for Radar in D2... but you should have pinged once even crouched. That team got what they deserved for not investigating who was standing up there...

Maybe they assumed the ping going away as enemies moving out
That also assumes that they are conscious of the radar. There is a surprising volume of players who seem to not use it very well.
