My advice? Start carrying a Fighting Lion. It's a Special, but it uses Primary ammo.

Not only that, but it's guaranteed to generate a brick of primary ammo on direct kills, and it gets a free round in the mag when you damage an enemy with it and mop them up with something else. It's almost impossible to run out of ammo as long as you're actually killing things with it. This is a pretty typical room after clearing it with FL:
