If 3D is so required, hopefully the filmmakers wont let it be released any other way.

You know this is very interesting, because we don't live in the 1940s where films were only seen in theatres. The reality is some people will not watch it the way it's supposed to be seen. And that's hard because you can't totally utilize your format because of that.

Like, in IMAX you can have a wide shot and every wrinkle on a character's face is visible, and the aspect ratio is 1.43:1. So you can populate your frame completely differently with more vertical compositions and fewer close ups. But on a phone or even a 16:9 HDTV? It'd look like shit unless you compromise and film thinking about how it'll look other ways.

There is no way that a large budget film will be released ONLY in IMAX theatres, since there's only about 400 in the world. Smaller budget or specialty films sure. But Dark Knight Rises is going to be shown at the murderplex.

It is not always an option to only release your film a specific way.
