The Dreaming City: Oh the things I've Yet Seen *SP* (Destiny)

This Space deserves... nay... requires it's own thread. Blah Blah Spoilers. Duh.
Speechless. Utterly Speechless. This place made is truly both of Dreams and Nightmares. Roleplay? Shoot, forget westerns, I want a group of 7 of us to roam these lands. To climb those misty tops, and borrow deep into its heart where swords are of no more use. Cortana may have defied gods and demons, but as a Guardian we will surely confront them, as light - no matter how small - will always part the dark.
Bungie, I dare you to wholly top this space. I freaking dare you, and I don't envy you in that dare.
But enough of my utterance of some sort of prose, an unnecessary declarence that we shall feast upon Thanksgiving* day. I have things to say about what these eyes have sampled behind my TV like some sort of delicatessen and it's wares. I won't tell out right, but I'll tell enough.
- I presume it a random drop, but I got an offering from a random(?) chest. A Plate, that apparently according to it's description, smelled faintly of mint. As I was exploring the Divalian Mists, I found upon the slide of a cliff a gate way(?). An opening. I crawled through this space in till I found, what appeared to be an Altar. There was a stone cat at the foot of said Altar, with green jeweled eyes (as I recall). I saw the option to give an offering, and I did so, and in return I received loot. A bond for my Warlock, called "Reverie Dawn Bond".
- In the Bay of Drowned Wishes... I would be surprised if there isn't something else hidden there, other than it's already scripted purpose.
- EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS SPOT! I have reason to think that it will change as... things happen. It is in the Spine of Keres. Hidden in that space is a spot with a... portal. You'll know you are in the right place when you stop running, and start walking - if that. It's called - "The Confluence". There is more, but, that will do for now.
*Work with me here ya Dam Commies. :P

I was just thinking that, more than any other Destiny location, the Dreaming City is screaming out for 6-player fireteams. I'm not exactly sure why. The Dreadnought was also filled with mystery and secrets and puzzles, but it somehow felt a little more closed-in, despite its scale. Maybe its the combination of such wide-open yet densely populated spaces along with so many different things happening all around at the same time, but Dreaming City makes me think that exploring with a group of 4-6 players would just feel... right.

I can't recall a "classical" fantasy story, where there isn't a whole group traveling through odd lands. Be it Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Never Ending Story... they all have, all need a group of friends to correctly and safely achieve their goal.
And, I guess, who doesn't want to share dreams. Oh look at that! Oh look at this!

It might be fun to get a big group of us together one night, split into fireteams of 3, but all stay in a party together while our fireteams explore. Maybe even set up a couple livestreams so we can keep tabs on what each group is up to :)

Yes, please. I just got into the Dreaming City this evening. I only spent 30 minutes or so there, but I can't wait to go back in, and it will undoubtedly be better with people.
What an absolutely beautiful location.

A tension I've felt about Destiny from the beginning is that it is almost always better with people, yet I enjoy discovering things on my own, too. That said, I'd be up for exploring this with others. I'm a bit more anxious about large parties with members doing different things. Maybe it's an age thing, but I find that distracting if I'm going anything that I want to pay attention to. One thing that has made protocol so awesome was we were a large party, doing the same thing!

I suppose it will all depend on how the Raid is structured then. ;)
So to speak, do we walk to the door, or spawn into a room with the door? For now its that fork in the road that will give the next step.

What about The Dark Tower?
It seems pretty clear to me that both the Thorn/Last Word story and the lore surrounding Forsaken is influenced a fair amount by The Dark Tower (which itself was heavily inspired by The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly), which is about a lone gunslinger that roams the wasteland (until he has to escort a boy - but still, not a whole group traveling through odd lands).
Haven't read it. S.King ain't my style.

In fact, based on his trend of works alone, the Dreadnought may be a better fit. If not, well, always an exception to the rule, right?

King is responsible for many works that aren’t focused on horror, and even then his varieties of horror make some things hard to pin like that. The Running Man is entirely different than The Shining is entirely different from The Dark Tower proper. His broader works are definitely worth looking into. He’s just crazy prolific, and so easy to just remember for a narrow aspect.

I still maintain that his short stories are far better than any of his novels. Dude doesn’t know when to shut up.

lol - I love his writing, I love many of his novels, but I'd say his biggest fault is that he doesn't know how to WRAP up. I'm good with really long stories, I just want the ending to be good, when it finally comes. And that's something he's NEVER been very good at. (I think I'd agree it's less of a problem with short stories, simply because they're short to begin with; he can just end and I'm happy. Novels need SOMETHING more than that.)

Honestly, I think a lot of my opinion just comes from The Stand. You could cut that book in half and it would still be about 30% longer than it needs to be. I think you could probably ditch the first 200 pages and it wouldn’t matter at all.
And this coming from the guy that likes The Fellowship of the Ring the best, loves The Council of Elrond, etc. I love world-building and long stories. I don’t know, maybe I just don’t actually like Stephen King’s writing that much (although, again, his short stories are great).

when is he gonna write a story about his greatest fear then?

That of a publisher prying his manuscripts away from him. (Yeah, I know, there already are a bunh of stories he has written kinda like that)

*** Dreaming City Spoilers ***
I made a little joke in an earlier post about how the dreaming city feels like "Lord of the Rings in space", and how I love the aesthetic.
I had a moment last night while out on patrol. A public event started. It was the one where you need to defend some kind of generator from waves of Skorn. I'm there with two other guardians. We formed a line in front of the generator while a crowd of Skorn began moving towards us, with their flaming maces and bronze helmets gleaming through the mist, the tower looming in the distance behind them. Us Guardians all drew our bows and began firing. A constant stream of arrows whipped through the air. Skorn were dropping fast, but every time one fell, 2 more would appear behind them. The fighting got more frantic as they drew closer. Soon we were fighting hand to hand, or with shotguns. We took turns with our supers, spreading out as the Skorn began to attack from multiple directions.
Is was epic. But specifically, it was hitting so many of the iconic "Lord of the Rings" notes between the visuals, the location, the atmosphere, the metal helmets and fire and arrows flying through the air. It was still 100% "Destiny", with the occasional Sleeper beam or airborne flaming hammer fitting right in with the rest of the aesthetic. But it was cohesive and unified in a way that the rest of Destiny rarely feels.
It occurred to me that there were a few missing pieces that would help complete this picture. The first was armor. Its funny to say, but the only thing that looked out of place in this whole battle was our guardians. All 3 of us looked like we could have been from 3 different videogames, and 1 guardian in particular looked like his arms, legs, chest, and head were all from different universes (lol). But I figure we'll be finding stylized armor that fits in with the Dreaming City aesthetic soon enough.
The other thing that jumped into my brain was SWORDS. Yes, there are swords in D2. And they're better now than they were before the 2.0 update. But I'm not sure they're as strong as they could/should be. All in know for sure is that when those Skorn closed the gap and I put my bow away in favor of my shotgun, what I really wished I was holding was a broadsword or an axe or something like that. It would have perfectly completed the picture that was being painted :)
Ugh. It's going to be a long day at work today, lol. I can't wait to get back in there :)

I don't think it ever was a joke. Between the haze, the refractive glow, and the Victorian/Celtic look to everything, it's honestly hard not to call back to other worlds that look like this.
I should also note, if you are a Titan, you do have access to a Broadsword. :)

...what I really wished I was holding was a broadsword...
That's what Crown-Splitter is for. (Titan required.)
But yes, that's my favorite of the Public Events. There's some other elements to it... something about collecting energy cells that the enemies drop. A group of randos managed to trigger the Heroic version on me and it was insane. This ain't one of those subtle Heroic events where you barely know something happened. You know. Immediately. And it is awesome and terrifying.

The Dreaming City is absolutely incredible. At this point I'm just reiterating what everyone else has said, but man is this space just gorgeous. I have never wished more that we had a photo mode in Destiny.
And the secrets . . . I think we have only just scratched the surface here. I became Ascendant today. I don't know what that means, or what it did (I got invited into a Blind Well session with some randos as soon as I did it, so I didn't get a chance to explore while it was active).
I want to spend more time here, but I think I'm going to return to the Tangled Shore and the other areas of the game and power up some more before I continue to dive in.
Anyway, despite the lack of photo mode, here's some 4K screenshots of the area:

I haven't made it to The Dreaming City yet. I'm still pretty Blind to it thus far.
If I remember correctly, is this the play area that was described as if it was going to be constantly changing with new things to see that would be popping up, as well as old stuff going away, giving unique memories for players that were there to experience it?
Will I potentially be missing out on anything Week 1 (Spoiler free request please, until I can visit the locale)

That’s basically impossible to answer until we see what the changes are. I would guess not really, though. Basically everyone is still too underpowered to accomplish much there this week. Stuff there can be as high as 550 (maybe higher) light.

The implication has been not necessarily missing out on most things (other than discovery if you have people who don’t respect spoilers) but that the changes are cyclical. The destination will be different each week and on the 4th week the change will be back to the same as the 1st week.
Is this a "Week 1" in The Dreaming City?

Is today the beginning of a "Week 1" in The Dreaming City?
Are there any new details I need to be informed of? (Since the last post I thought I heard about it being a 3 Week rotation instead of 4, but I am not fully aware)
I'm looking to venture into The Dreaming City, possibly tonight. I'm still basically Spoiler free on details.
However at some point later I'd like to know specifically what I may have missed out on by not being there Day 1? (Petra location moved or something like that) I think this is going to require someone who was there on Day 1 who also has revisited during the new cycle?
It is indeed.

Be sure to listen to Petra and other NPC dialogue. They’re aware that the Dreaming City is in a time loop.

*** Dreaming City Spoilers ***
For those of us who are exploring the Dreaming City...
How the heck do we please these judgmental cats?
I know that it requires a "small offering". I've ended up with one of those in my inventory shortly after arriving in the Dreaming City, and gave it to a cat who in turn gave me a piece of armor. I'm trying to complete the Dreaming City armor set, so I'm trying to find more Small Offerings so that I can give them to more cats. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to get more Small Offerings. I've seen a few posts on reddit saying that people have gotten them from Heroic Public events, or from the Blind Well. I must have done ~20 heroic PEs, a dozen Lost Sectors, 6 or 7 Tier 2 Blind Well completions, a boatload of Patrols... nothing.
Has anyone managed to get a Small Gift to drop? Any ideas of how its supposed to happen?

Can’t you just buy them from Petra with Dark Shards? Or is that not the same thing and I’m confused? Before you asked this question I’d have been positive that I gave one of those to the cat in the Observatory, but maybe I had something else that I wasn’t aware of.

The items you get from Petra are not the same as what you give the cats. They seem to be world drops. I have not seen any actual conclusive evidence of how exactly you get them or if there is any associated timegate with their access.

I haven't given anything to the cats, but I got a piece of Dreaming City armor from I think a public event. It has a mod that lets me do more damage there but also causes me to take more damage. The mod is called Riven's Curse.

Yeah I’ve managed to get the complete set on my Titan, with the exception of the Helmet. The armor, as well as the Dreaming City weapons, seem to be part of the loot pool from PE chests and high value targets.
All the armour seems to come with that perk that you discribed. I also got an armour mod somewhere that does gives you the boost to damage output in the dreaming city, but without taking more damage.
