Anyone Have the new Astro A50 Gen 3 Headset AND issues? (Destiny)

by OldnAchy, Saturday, November 05, 2016, 12:06 (3184 days ago)

Just purchased Astro A50 Gen 3 headset; went thru set up; and immediately found a problem in Destiny game chat. I can hear other fire team members but they can't hear me. Party chat is not a problem. My thinking on this is that Destiny still expects chat audio thru the controller -- headset plugged into the controller -- and because the A50 is truly wireless Destiny does not recognize the microphone audio. Party chat, however, being an XBL function does not have the issue.

This problem is pretty new since the headset just hit the market but I wonder if anyone else has discovered this problem and/or has developed a work around.

Being constantly in party chat is certainly not the end of the world, but is a bit of a bump for casual fire team joining and apparently is another problem with Destiny in a big bucket of problems.

I do not have the Gen 3, but I'm seriously tempted to upgrade so I don't have to use a cable anymore! Any complaints aside from the one mentioned?

Wanted to use them a little before replying. As far as I can see, game chat in Destiny is the only issue. One nice feature is a USB charging port on the base unit. This allows me to use a play and charge cable for my controller (rechargeable battery) when necessary. I have a Slim and both USB ports are already being used, one for the A50 base station and one for external storage.

Yeah, I'm pretty tempted to upgrade to gen 3 because of wireless chat (I pretty much never use in game chat, so that's a non issue for me) and the dock so I actually remember to charge them when not using them. Having a charge port on it is even better.

Is Beorn on an A50?

by ZackDark @, Not behind you. NO! Don't look., Saturday, November 05, 2016, 14:19 (3184 days ago) @ OldnAchy

He constantly has that problem, but apparently, a controller/headset (one of them, dunno which) reset fixes it.

Beorn has gen 2 like me, meaning you have to have a chat cable for chat to work at all

I have issues with my chat being too quiet if the headset and controller are powered on in the wrong sequence.

I’m trying to figure out how the A50 Gen 3’s actually get voice into the Xbox since XB1 bizarrely still doesn’t support industry-standard USB audio connections like the PS4 does. The manual on their website only goes to the PS4 version’s manual.

For now, I’m sticking with Gen 2 because I like being able to use my headphones on XB1 and PS4, not having to choose between one or the other.

I gave up on Astros

Still use a gen 2 mixamp in my setup, but from the get go I was replacing parts or having periodic troubles. When an earpiece fell off, I decide to move on from my A40s, which is disappointing because I assumed I was getting the best. Caveat: never owned the A50s.

I really like my A50s, but they do feel like cheap garbage compared to the Sennheisers I paid less than a third of the price for. I'm not sure where my $300 went for the Astros, but it doesn't feel like much of it was to build quality.

I've heard great things about Sennheiser from Blackstar and other folks. Love my AKGs. The only bad thing about them is the bumpy uncomfortable headband, but I just ordered this, which should fix that problem.

Seriously, thanks for that link. I've been looking at headphones a lot recently and looking to upgrade out of my Sennheiser HD 280s. I was heavily considering the Sennheiser 598s (and debating whether it might be worth the extra money to just step up to the 600s). I'll have to look into those AKGs more now, though.

Price in a headphone amp when you consider it. Here's my set up. Blackstar also talks about what he uses in that thread.

Huge fan of both. And I've definitely busted a few Astros. My A30s are on the fritz, but I travel with them a bunch and they get a ton of wear and tear as my daily work headphones. My A40s have been tried and true since I got them back before A50s. I'm looking forward to upgrading A38s for work and A50s for play. I frankly may get multiple A50 base stations so I can easily use them at my desk as well at my TV.

Anyways, if anyone goes the route of Sennheisers, more power to you, their best in class and I've loved the ones that I've had. Major reason I go for Astro is I want the most seamless experience using them.

FWIW, my Astros have been fine. They've not sustained any damage or any signs of wear. They may last for years to come. They just feel cheap when compared to my Sennheisers. And those Senns have been absolutely abused, surviving a significant amount of air travel and being shoved into backpacks, and a deployment to the desert. I adore my Astros and will probably never use anything else for gaming, but I wouldn't use them day to day for anything else--they go immediately back onto the stand when I'm finished with them because I'm not sure they'd hold up to much else.

I think I originally got a bad mic and had replace a cable during the first several years of using the A40s with the Xbox 360. Otherwise, they were fine. Then I got an Xbox One. Nothing but trouble after that, and I'm sure a part of that had to do the mixamp I was using. Drove me nuts. those of you who played with me during year one heard my complaints.

Well there is that, too. They work fine on PS4, but you remember the echo issues I was having during our King's Fall sessions on Xbox. I even sent them in for service (they said there was a mic issue) but it was basically the same when I got them back.
