Who are our Guardians? (Destiny)

So I started my first new Guardian since launch and have already concocted up my own head canon about her, an Exo Titan. That being said, as well as with her Awoken Hunter sister, I'm confused to who exactly our Guardians are in firmly established canon.

Our Ghost wandered the Cosmodrome of Old Russia in search of a spark of light and just outside the wall, in the rusting carnage of a futuristic traffic jam, they found us. So who are we? Our Guardians obviously have a knack for the Light to a greater extent than most others subject to the whims of the Darkness. What I'm wondering is, are we long deceased Guardians who were unable to be revived by a long lost, likely destroyed old Ghost of our own? Or were we just some ordinary, defenseless person trying to escape the horrors which followed in the Traveler's wake?

Even more so than, just a ghost trying to find a long dead person that had light, it's the fact that our ghost was trying to find a person with light that fit correctly. Our ghost has said that it has passed over several candidates before it got to our guardian. Why does the ghost have to be the perfect fit? Were the ghosts in some way linked with who we were before we died?

On top of which, we weren't even our Ghost's first choice. The first choice didn't want to be a Guardian, and went back into Cryosleep.

For all intents and purposes, we shouldn't even be alive yet.

That begs the question, are the number of Guardians extremely limited? Like, you would imagine all potential candidates to become Guardians would be exhausted should they meet a minimum threshold. Yet from what you've stated our Ghost had only one person in mind at any given time, as if there was a "Light economy" so to speak prohibiting mass revivals. Makes since given how Light is strained through our subclasses and within our weapons and armor, that Ghosts would require the same restrictions utilizing it.

I imagine that these things being called "Ghosts" will eventually turn out to be a little bit more literal than we now know it to be. We have stories of Ghosts searching Earth and Mars for their individual Guardian even in the current day some 400+ years after the Collapse. My current theory is that our Ghost was somehow linked to us individually when the Traveler "died".

As to whether we're special in some way... it's hard to say, We know some current Guardians, like Cayde-6, were combat trained. Cayde served as a special forces Exo and later as a body guard to Maya Sundaresh on Venus, for instance. We also have what appears to be Jaren Ward's Ghost transferring to Shin Malphur after Jaren's death... but Shin was also recognized as being somehow special so I'm not entirely clear what was going on there.

Another thing that is really weird is that we can have Exo's, awoken and humans be guardians, but why weren't there any Fallen guardians after the Traveler gave them their golden age? Is it because the guardians are a last ditch effort to protect the Traveler?

I think that would be the most logical scenario, though I wonder why Light couldn't be infused into the likes of Variks and others in houses like Judgment (and formerly Wolves) who largely, if not entirely abandoned the Darkness.

Whoever they are, they seem to have gone mute
