Biggest difference between Destiny and The Division (Off-Topic)

by Funkmon @, Friday, January 29, 2016, 13:02 (3227 days ago)

I've played literally some of The Division, a new video game people are already calling "a game like Destiny."

A lot of the parts of the games appear to be similar. Gun mods, perks, abilities, open world co op crap.

However, there is a huge difference: Destiny is fun.

People here and there complaining about Destiny don't seem to account for the fact that every second of shooting and running around and sparrowing is fun as heck. Opening chests is fun. Decrypting engrams is fun. Every second of actual gameplay of Destiny was meticulously designed to be fun and pleasing.

Are you saying the Division isn't fun?

Granted you only played some of the game, but did you not find it entertaining?

Not really. Opening chests, using the map, throwing grenades, samey guns, nothing was particularly fun. It seems like a fine diversion, but nothing I'd play after I get through the story, and nothing I'd pay full price for.

Example: I played for around 30 minutes the first time and decided to take a nap and turn the game off. That's the level of fun we're talking about.

As far as the regular minute to minute gameplay I absolutely agree. Bungie has always excelled at games that are just fun to play because their shooting, moving, and ability mechanics feel so good. However, playing the Division beta I did have a lot of fun with some things. For example the Dark Zone is a lot more fun than I expected. Lots of tense moments when you encounter other agents and wonder if they are going to kill you (a lot of times for no reason). I still think I'll get it, but there's no way I'm going to put 1000 hours in about a year into it :)

" For example the Dark Zone is a lot more fun than I expected. Lots of tense moments when you encounter other agents and wonder if they are going to kill you"

This drives me crazy. There are plenty of people better then me at PVP, in fact there are at least eight thousand given what I can tell from guardian.gg. I don't want to struggle with a difficult PVE encounter only to have some jerk swoop in and steal my stuff.

I don't miss the griefing from World Of Warcraft's open world PVP at all. Stupid high level rogues one shotting you in the middle of killing a rare mob, or waves of invincible enemy players wiping out a town where I need to turn in a quest. Or even having to PVP just to get into an instance to raid that night. I don't miss any of that frustration.

Everything I hear about the Division is that the game play and story are so so, and I am still considering trying it out but I keep getting back to having to go into PVP zones where everyone hides behind crates and then steals your loot. For a game that wants me to spend lots of time in it that is such a deal breaker.

Difference is though you never have to go into the Dark Zone, it's only if you want to have some PvP fun.

From the preview videos all the high end loot is in the Dark Zone, so you have to go in if you want to get high end gear. Similar to Challenge Mode Raids and ToO being the only option for 320 loot.

You could be right, but I haven't seen anything in the marketing suggesting it's the ONLY place you can get high end loot, just that it's A place to get high end loot.

Gloves from rank 5 package and ghost from end of round rewards. So 320 IB loot is real and it's out there.

Division looked like it has amazing potential in the beginning, but then the Ubisoft reality kicked in. The Alpha footage looked extremely boring and unfocused, and little that Has come from the devs is encouraging. Rather than focusing on how good it could be or what people are looking forward to, everyone is comparing it to Destiny, and focusing on how it "won't be Destiny".

The game is far too overhyped, and I feel sorry for the devs because of this. The game will be reviewed with Destiny in mind, and that is going to hurt it. I predict middling reviews; 6.5-8.0.

It'd be surprising if I'm proven wrong, though.

I think the opposite will happen. Destiny reviews were like this:

"I can't stop playing this game. Not enough stuff to do because I play 12 hours a day. Very disappointed. 6/10."

I bet this game will have reviews like this.

"Not Destiny. 10/10."

I rarely trust initial reviews anymore. Initial Star Wars Phantom Menace reviews hailed it as the second coming. This was the moment I started to distrust the media.

The gunplay reminds me strongly of Watch_Dogs, to be honest.

So far, the Beta feels extremely empty, but apparently the DeadZone is quite exciting. Still too early to judge, to be honest, but it clearly isn't a Day-One buy.

Avatar

You are not wrong.

by cheapLEY @, Sunday, January 31, 2016, 01:12 (3226 days ago) @ Funkmon

In fact, you're completely correct.

The beta pretty much put the nail in the coffin of my interest in The Division. The shooting sucks, the HUD is the busiest, ugliest mess I've seen in a long time, walking around the city is awful because everything looks the same. It's pretty in a look-at-all-the-rendered-crap sort of way, but I'll be damned if I ever had a clue where I was.

Played for about two hours, hoping something would change or that it would click for me in some way, but it never happened. That'll probably be my entire time with The Division.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess, but I don't see any redeeming qualities. It's a very adequate third person, cover based shooter. Gears did that better. I didn't play it long enough to truly judge, I guess, but it seems like it's only really an adequate loot-based RPG, too.

Destiny was fun. Once. The 300th time I'm supposed to kill that strike boss for a mythical loot drop that I'll never actually see is not fun, it's work. Which is why I don't do strikes anymore. Destiny is 10% awesome, 20% fun, and 70% work. Unfortunately they front-load on the fun so you spend the rest of your gameplay chasing the dragon.

Maybe you spend all your time chasing dragons, but not everyone does. Heroic Strikes are my favorite part of Destiny. The newer and redone Strikes can actually pose a challenge while the matchmaking usually ensures I have someone to help me along and people I can assist. It's the simple fun of being able to pickup and play a set of decent, enjoyable missions when I'm not feeling competitive or don't have hours to Raid.

Hahaha, yeah, truth.

I actually spend very little time chasing dragons these days. I'm basically a pure pvp player now. But I feel the pull of the dark side tempting me with challenge mode loot that I don't really want just because *numbers*. Not gonna do it. So sick of LFG groups complaining about their 13 yo GF who won't hold hands in public or whatever. UGH. I wish networked games had some kind of "I'm an adult so please match me with other adults" setting.

No, this wasn't a "please give me advice" sort of chat, it was a very high pitched voice saying:

"yeah bro, it's cool. She's at like 7-11 or something just waiting for me to show up and buy her a slurpee but I ain't gonna 'cause I'm here sherpaing you weak asses through warpriest" (immediately dies) "Man you guys suck. That's why you don't have girlfriends and I do. Anyway, so she won't hold hands with me even though we're totally dating" (dies again) "which is bullshit, you know? Like who doesn't hold hands? We're practically in high school and. Oh, what the fuck? Why am I dead again? God you guys suck at this game."

For the first 5 minutes I was laughing because I thought it was a joke. Nope.

Really? I got the impression from Cody talking about bringing the PS4 crew back together that it was sort of dying on that side.

I play my Xbox One maybe twice a week, but every time I log on, I've got 20 friends online and 10-15 of those people are playing Destiny. Obviously there's a selection bias as most of my friends list is folks from here, but for other folks that frequent here, it shouldn't be difficult to find someone to play with.
