I purchased A50s after that thread. I had a chat adapter already to use with my Sennheiser 280s, and I went ahead and bought the talk back cable, but I still had issues with my headset causing an echo for everyone in my party.

Astro has my set right now for repair or replacement under warranty because of the issue, so I'm hoping it gets resolved.

FWIW, regarding A50s . . . (reply)

My experience hasn't matched cruel's at all. I feel like the adjusting the mix with the headset works excellently and has a pretty nice taper, on par with what the chat adapter provides. But he's right in that it is much more convenient if you do have the chat adapter. The mixing on that works well too, and having the mute button is much, much better than having to reach up and flip the mic up.

Granted, I can't really recommend the A50s either. Mine are currently en route to Astro for warranty repair or replacement, because they cause an ungodly echo in party chat (just ask Kermit, or Red Robber, or the others I annoyed while raiding). If it weren't for that, they'd be amazing, so I'm hoping the issue can be fixed.

For what it's worth... (reply)

Any idea if I can use this with my chat headset*, or does it mute the game audio assuming you want to hear the game through headphones?

*which is itself falling apart. When dies I don't know what I will do. Why am I the only gamer who wants a quality chat headset but does not want a headband or to block out my good speaker system? I have even less understanding of why wireless chat headsets seem to be taking a break for this generation of consoles.

Yeah, that's one is obviously Xbox only, but now there are one for each platform (PS4 and Xbox) in the old form factor.

Those work cross-platform. I use the “Xbox” variant on my PS4 all the time. The trick is that the PS4 version doesn’t come with a chat cable since it doesn’t need it. Even if you get the Xbox version, though, you need to do some shenanigans before the A50s actually work on the Xbox.

They do have volume and blend controls on the cups, but the levels don't taper nicely. It goes from too loud to not much different to off. And there's no mute switch. Plus you need to take your hand off the controller to make changes.

If I'm playing with other people and using my mic, I'll actually stick with a cheap set of earbuds and the chat adapter.

True, but I already have the A50s. Plus the great thing about the chat adapter is its attached to the controller; no reaching for a separate device to adjust volume settings. That and it'll work with whatever headset I plug in to it.

That's crazy to me (reply)

I haven't had any issues with the Xbox One or any of the related equipment. I've lived in 4 houses in the last year, so I've moved the Xbox to different climates, different room sizes, TVs, sound systems, everything. The experience has been flawless the entire time.

My Kinect always recognizes me and my voice commands work every time. I probably have to repeat a voice command once a week at the very most.

The headsets that I've used have all worked including the mic when I plugged them in the first time. Whether it was a crappy phone earbud set or my Kingston HyperX Cloud (Butt).

I hear you talk about your mic issues and Morpheus about his Kinect issues and I just get flabbergasted. I wish that everyone could have the experience that I've had with XBone because it's just left me tickled pink.

I guess I'm incredibly lucky, especially considering I didn't even buy a "new" Xbox. I bought it used from a random internet stranger that I saw on Reddit who had it for about a year and wanted to use the money to build a PC.

Have you considered that your controller might be broken?

What you are describing is absolutely not normal, and I've heard of a lot of quality issues with the new controllers (clicky left triggers, 3.5mm jack detection issues, stuck dpads, etc). If you have the receipt take it back to wherever you bought it and let them know it's not working correctly (or call Microsoft support and talk it over with them).
