Follow Up. (reply)

Courtesy of Ars Technica.

It's still unclear if any actual content is downloaded, or if it is just a link. That said there is a way to turn off said feature if you so wish.

From the article:

In any case, at least Sony provides the option to turn off these somewhat intrusive "features." You can turn off the system's ability to automatically download content in "rest" mode by going through Settings > System > Automatic Downloads. You can turn off those curated "featured content" promotions in the Settings > System > Automatic Downloads > Featured Content.

Made this follow up since it seemed simply nice to know. Take it as you will.

Why Destiny is on your PlayStation 4. (reply)

I can check if people want. I haven't had Destiny installed on my box for ages so I think I qualify as someone who might have a surprise Taken King install there.

Why Destiny is on your PlayStation 4. (reply)

Yeah, I also got the impression that it was downloaded and just waiting for a purchase so you could play it immediately.

Now, though, I don't actually have a clue.

If it is downloaded, that's bad. If not, it's still bad, but only in a minor annoyance way. I don't have a Playstation, but I imagine there's enough unnecessary crap on the the screen, and I hate that. I'm the kind of dude that doesn't have desktop shortcuts, because I think it looks bad, so this would absolutely annoy the crap out of me.

At least it's simple to turn off.

It's not clear, as it also quotes the Playstation website about content being "pre-loaded and ready to go."

Why Destiny is on your PlayStation 4. (reply)

Claude, I got the exact opposite from the article:

An icon for the game will show up on the system's home screen, which prompts players to purchase and download the game from the PlayStation Store.

I heard about the plans for this during PAX 2014. After the iTunes U2 free-album fiasco and realizing that some people have hard data caps, resulting in a download like this costing them money, I wasn't surprised I had never heard about it again... Until now.

Hmm... reading it again, maybe you're both right. It DOES say 'link' in a few places. In my first read-through, I had the impression it was dumping the actual game on your system, then prompting you to pay to unlock it.

Links are better (though still annoying - if I'd wanted that thing you're pushing, I'd have bought it).

Why Destiny is on your PlayStation 4.

You are on a Destiny/Bungie fan site. But even if you weren't here to read this, you would still have it.

I don't know what to think of this.

Edit: I wonder... how much bandwidth this would take up?
