I think I was averaging around one exotic per 6-7 coins

Mine was about 4.75 coins per exotic. I thought that quite low myself. I know others that were less than 3 so good for them I guess.

I did it twice.

The first time I got 5 exotics from 30 cards.

The second time I got 3 exotics from 30 cards.

So my rate is 7.5 cards/exotic. In that context, your rate is NOT low. :)

First time I tried Draksis; 2 exotics from 5 cards. Second time; 2 exotics from 15 cards. So my average is an even 5/card.

Really? I mean, was this really a problem that needed fixing?!?

It's not like you can actually DO anything with "too many Exotic shards".

Sure you can. You can take out 300 or higher versions of exotics (which some apparently do exist, not on accident) and infuse lower grade weapons, and if you can create shards by leveling up exotics you take out of your blueprints over and over to get increasing amounts of shards it can take out a lot of the effort required.

Ok, there's that, but it also costs a nontrivial amount of Glimmer...I dunno, doesn't seem to me like a "patch level" worthy thing to even worry about, but that's just me.

...but I did use them as often as I could. Favorite exotic drop was from the shade of oryx in the teleport bubble when fighting oryx himself.

I've gotten 7-8 exotic drops over the course of about forty-five 3 of coin buffs. It's not consistent though -- I had a stretch of almost 20 before I got the next drop.

I did it twice.

It looks like the drop rate is still the same unless you're farming ultras repeatedly in a short time.

Bungie's solution seems pretty elegant, really, and I'm glad they went the route they did. It prevents too-easy farming, but allows the Three of Coins to work as intended through Strikes.

Edit: I did Draksis farm, and I got 9 or 10 exotics from 35 coins.

That was me; IIRC it was 15 coins getting 5 drops.

-- Steve didn't farm Draksis, though; this was via the Strike playlists and the Daylies.
