I don't think it reduces damage as much as gives you more HP... but I could be off here. I don't notice my numbers ever being reduced when shooting guys with the Ram on, but they are certainly noticeably harder to kill.

Side thought: If you are looking to run Crucible and haven't liked it or are new to it, I recommend running with 1-2 (or more) friends in Control, and just try to have as much fun as you can and play conservative, sticking with your teammates. Thorn won't kill me in two head shots via tick damage (as seen in this clip), and in general you have a handful more HP. I am sure someone on Youtube has worked this out to percentages.

Those Thorn ticks around 1:40, and then again around 1:50! Man is he lucky he had his armor just high enough.

The other team played really bad at the end... Although I suppose I would be nervous about running into that room with that guy, even if I had two teammates with me.
