Not entirely nonsense. Critics generally agree that meaning is distorted but not absent in the poem. And many of the created words have since become "real" words. Some say Carroll was inspired by a passage by Shakespeare, who invented a truckload of words.

Even if it were true, the joke is essentially "If you can't do a thing it's not fun to do"? Hardly insightful observational humour in the first place.

But seeing that it's untrue, the joke becomes "Wouldn't it suck if you couldn't do a thing". Comedy gold.
