I'll break it down for you.

Pre-DLC:
Vendor Legendary armour = Max 27 Light
VoG Legendary armour = Max 30 Light
Exotic armour = Max 30 Light

Post-DLC:
Vendor Legendary armour = Max 33 Light
CE Raid Legendary armour = Max 36 Light
Old, Un-upgraded exotic armour = Max 30 Light
New or upgraded Exotic armour = Max 36 Light

(Where "New" means exotics received after the DLC dropped, not just new types of exotics)

Maybe they will just give us extra, empty upgrade slots; just tack them onto the existing tech trees.

Or just wind back the existing circles to reflect the current proportion of... (Oh good grief, how do I describe this?)

Imagine that your original circle adds thirty units of whatever the thing is (defence?) and the corresponding circle in the new level item would add 40 units...

Then just wind back your circle to be 3/4 full and just ask you to fill up the remaining 1/4.

The best non-helmet gear maxes out at 36 but after the next DLC is released...
