I'm thinking similar things. For example, I might put the Waking Ruins video at the top of the page. For the Templar battle, I'll probably scatter multiple videos inline with the text, since it's a more complicated encounter. Does that sound roughly like what you had in mind?

Sure. I would hope you weren't going to post 10 videos in a row at the top of your article! :P

But as I said it depends a lot on how you shoot and edit the video. If it's just pure gameplay, even the first bit might need a minimum of explanation up-front along the lines of:

Stand on all 3 plates to activate them

Stop Praetorians taking them long enough for the spire to form

When the spire is complete, it opens the door

If a Praetorian steps on a plate, you must kill them and reactivate it to progress

This, if possible (reply)

A few people have mentioned the idea of scrolling text next to a static video so they can read while always keeping the video in view.

This is an interesting idea... I'm not sure if it would work in all cases, but it's something I want to test and explore, eventually.

For now, I'm using Wordpress free hosting, which limits my ability to customize page layouts. I've got access to some basic theme-level CSS, but that's all. Once I get most of the content done, I'll probably look at moving the site to paid hosting, which will let me dig in and customize stuff a lot further.

PS: It's not entirely correct as is, but it's in the ballpark

DestinyRaider.net Update/Suggestions? (reply)

Bottom, but with a way to quickly and easily access it on return visits. That way, when I realize that I only remember a quarter of what to do a few minutes before I start, I can quickly skim the article, but when I have a longer time frame to prep, I can get right to watching the action and making notes.

"Note 1: Don't die. You will fail. A lot."

DestinyRaider.net Update/Suggestions? (reply)

I would prefer the bottom. But if there was a way you could set the description inside a scroll box then you could scroll through the description while watching the video. I am not sure if thats something you would be interested in doing. Otherwise the Bottom would be nice in my opinion.

I would LOVE help with the maps :D
I'm going to create animated gifs that show enemy spawns and fireteam placements, so all I need for the maps are the basic layouts for the main encounters: waking ruins, templar's well, and Atheon's room.
I want maps that look nice but are fairly simple/minimal. They need to be clean and easy to comprehend.
Interested in giving it a shot?

Definitely. I completely agree that the maps should be minimalistic but attractive, and easy to read at a glance. :)

Hit me with an email (it's in my profile) and we'll get something going.

In general, video should be at the top of postings. It's more comfortable as a viewing position on many displays, and it can often leave room below for accompanying text that can be read simultaneously.

However, it depends how self-explanatory a video is too. If the viewer is going to think 'what the fuck am I watching?' when they see it, then either the video needs revising, or the explanatory text needs to come first - to arm them with the necessary information.

I generally prefer to read, and then choose to watch a video if I have time/space/audio/bandwidth, so my vote is text first, video second.

I'll give the page a good read and get back to you on the other questions. :)

Also, do you need/want assistance drawing maps and such? That could be a fun project.

DestinyRaider.net Update/Suggestions?

So I've been slowly working away at the first major content feature for destinyraider.net:
the Vault of Glass walkthrough.
This walkthrough is meant to be a detailed guide, specifically aimed at first-time raiders (I'll have separate quick-reference pages for more experienced raiders who just need maps/tips and don't need all the descriptive text).

I've got the majority of the guide written. Still need to add most of the images and maps, but I've got video clips in place.

My question to you all:

Would you prefer to see video clips at the top of each section of the guide, or at the bottom? In other words, would you rather read the discription, then watch the video? Or watch first, read second?

Any thoughts/impressions would be greatly appreciated :)
