My guess: you get exactly as much credit for that as you get for the experience already put into your exotics. I'm not bitter.

YES, level up your Vanguard/Crucbile rank one level for each Commendation only good for one piece of gear.

NO, you don't get any commendations for the levels you already have.

Like I said in my thread, this is a kick in the nuts.

The new raid will drop gear that can get you up to 32, but you need raid exclusive materials (Radiant Shards, Radiant Energy) in order to level the raid armor/weapons up.

My guess is the new legendary gear will get you to 30 without needing special Iron Banner / Vault of Glass gear while you'd need Dark Below Raid gear to reach level 31 and 32. I think the only place you'd suffer is Iron Banner... but even then I think as long as you're within 2 levels of your opponent you are 100% fine. So if you reach level 30 the only thing you'd actually be underleveled for is the new raid's hard mode... which you won't have since you didn't buy the DLC.

And won't be available until later anyway.

I have to assume that if this Legendary armor was going to have a higher maximum light level they would have said that right? Why would they not communicate that to us?

So in order to level up I have to buy the expansion correct? Meaning if I don't I will be forever under leveled for the activities where your level matters.

If I had to guess I would guess it'll be like the regular game. You can get to level 31 without the expansion, but you can only get to 32 (maybe 33 since the Hard Raid is level 33?) by playing the Raid.

Just to enumerate:

- Strange Coins
- Ascendant Shards
- Ascendant Energy
- Vanguard Marks
- Crucible Marks

With the exception of Vanguard and Crucible Marks you aren't guaranteed to get any of the other currencies so you just have to play until you randomly earn enough to get something. Now they are adding and additional 5 currencies!?
