Like factions, you gain rank with the cryptarch. Every engram you decode with him gives you a little more exp, and when you get enough to increase your rank, you get a package in the mail. The package can contain upgrade materials, or blue / purple engrams. Often these blue engrams decode for coins. You get one every time you gain a rank.

Once you hit rank 3 and every rank up afterwards, you get some nice engrams from the Postmaster, just like every other rank-able entity on the Tower, I guess. So far, it has been my #1 source of Ascendant Shards.

The Cryptarch has rep just like the Vanguard and factions, it's shown by the circle meter and the number in it, off to the left when you talk to him, or in the upper right on the website when you click on his icon. You build rep by decrypting engrams. When you rank up you get access to more and better engrams to buy, and I think you also get a free thing.

Nah. I have 4 strange coins, total. I'm not getting any of them either. The difference is, I don't really care. :)

I literally got 4 strange coins yesterday by not even trying. 2 from engrams, 1 for leveling up the Cryptarch, and one in the crucible. How on Earth have you only found FOUR total this entire time?!

1) I play less than you do.
2) I get very few engrams at all. (I think I got 1 in half an hour of playing yesterday.)
3) I don't even know what 'leveling up the Cryptarch' means.
4) I have fewer than a dozen Crucible games under my belt, I think.

Theres not much better to spend those Motes on. Cosmetic items from the speaker, or something potentially awesome from an Engram. Engram every time, warts and all.

I just spent my Motes on Xur's engram as well. In fact, I spent all the Motes that I had been earning since I started playing the game. Every single Mote has been meticulously saved for every moment that I have been playing the game, just for this.

And when my Warlock went to decrypt it, it turned into a helmet for a Titan. A class that I never plan on playing. Those literal weeks of saving and I literally just through all of those Motes into the trash. That's beyond ridiculous.

It is ridiculous... but, why did you buy an engram?

I haven't seen a single purple engram yet. Not one. All my Legendary gear has come from the queen, with the exception of my Gauntlets that popped out of a Blue engram.

...wait. You were able to spend 46 Motes of light today? O_o

I had something like 37 at the start of the day. Then got the XP one on my Hunter, complete campaign one on my Warlock and got lucky with a few decrypted from de-coherent engrams and level-up bonuses at the Cryptarch.

Also - I too got Helm of Saint-14. I'm a Warlock. I'm debating breaking it down or keeping it just in case I ever feel like playing my Titan long enough to reach 20. At least I didn't waste my Strange Coins.

I just kept all my non-hunter stuff and gave it to my other characters when they leveled up. Both jumped from 20 to 22 instantly. Then a few more drops and my Titan is now a 25 with very minimal effort (exotic helm, legendary gauntlets and boots, rare chest).

All I wanted is the Skull of Dire Ahamkara. I thought I had a chance. ;_;

It's actually pretty weird. Everyone I have played with who has played less than I have has been awarded plenty of Legendary weapons/armor/engrams for playing Crucible or Story mode. Thus far I've only had three Legendary engrams given to me in the world proper. Beyond that, I've only gotten them by leveling up the Cryptarch. Ascendant Shards are few and far between.

I was actually getting really frustrated by only ever getting Strange Coins until someone told me what Xur was all about in week two of launch. Now he's just there for me to get Ascendant Shards. :P

The RNG hates me. All it's given me are Strange Coins. I think I've bought four things from Xur at this point just so I could scrap them for Ascendant Shards. And I still have Strange Coins left over.

THE GAME'S BEEN OUT FOR 3 WEEKS. It's not like you wasted a year of your time or something - it's been 3 weeks. You earn them faster than you ever did before, so just go earn some more!

This is so true. I haven't spent any at all and I'm at 45. I also get Strange Coins like no one's business.

What do you consider "like no one's business". I just hit 13 strange coins yesterday, having never spent a single one. My game time is 41 hours as of right now.
