When using the companion app, I see only silhouettes because my phone is ancient, right?

Check under settings in the app and see if the "Display 3D over 3G/LTE" box is checked. Maybe that's the issue?

Mine was checked - but I had to delete the cache (which was about 4 mb) in order for the full model to show up.
