Massive Update (reply)

Falling behind, seeing how the powerful engram system was working, and knowing the game was going free to play… all that together was what made me decide to quit.

I can't remember how any of that leveling stuff worked anymore, it's changed so many times.

I feel lucky (thanks Kermit) to have at least tried all the raids except for VoG and the latest one (Desert Perpetual) blind. Not really sure how many we finished totally blind, but we usually at least made it to the point where we figured out most of the final boss mechanics, which felt like enough. My rankings probably do reflect that a bit - Crota was my first blind raid so it's a bit higher, and I never did VoG blind so I don't have a super fond memory of that one. But some of them are also based on how satisfying it was to develop expertise on them from doing them frequently and in many different challenging ways to get Triumphs. Crown of Sorrow is one like that - the final encounter initially seems brutally punishing, but my group eventually developed enough expertise we could juggle all the required tasks and improvise solutions to mistakes on the fly.

We share the same standard for completion when it comes to blind raids: once we've figured out the final mechanic, the blind raid is complete. I also feel lucky to have had that experience most of the time. We got hints sometimes. Sometimes whether we wanted them or not. Desert Perpetual wasn't blind. Salvation's Edge wasn't blind except the first encounter. We tried! The one that makes me the maddest is Crota's End, because someone couldn't keep their mouth shut. (Admittedly, it takes a special person to pretend to be blind, but I know a few who can do it.) VoG blind was almost indescribable, just because every aspect was so new--soup to nuts. And maybe everyone was just younger, but everyone could play the whole weekend with only short breaks. Amazing.

Just looked at my stats. Across all platforms and D1 and D2, I've played VoG the most--126 times. Wow! It is the easiest to recruit for.

Massive Update (reply)

That’s interesting. I love Scourge, but the best? Now you have me thinking, and I’m not sure which is the best. If I could do any raid right this second, I think it would be Deep Stone Crypt, but I’m not sure I think it’s the best. Not to mention the two or three I’ve never done.

Looks like back in 2021, I started ranking raids, but never really finished it. I actually misremembered, apparently I put Last Wish at #1, but Scourge was #2. The argument for Scourge at #1 is "all killer, no filler", whereas Wish probably has 2 encounters that aren't great, plus the big cheese issue when it comes to Riven.

Here's what I had in 2021:

1. Last Wish
2. Scourge of the Past – All killer, no filler.
3. Wrath of the Machine – D1
4. Deep Stone Crypt
5. Crown of Sorrow
6. Garden of Salvation
7. Crota’s End – D1
8. Kings Fall – D1
9. Eater of Worlds
10. Leviathan
11. Spire of Stars
12. Vault of Glass – D1

At that time, we hadn't had reissued D2 versions of King's Fall, Crota's End or VoG, and the new raids that are missing on this list are:

Vow of the Disciple
Root of Nightmares
Salvation’s Edge
Desert Perpetual (still haven't done the boss)

We need to correct that!

I'd say all of those clear D1 Crota's End. Maybe I'll think about it and update my list, I'd love to see what other people think now that it seems like this might be it for Destiny raids for the foreseeable future.

I should really consider making a list of my favorites.

Overall, Deep Stone Crypt is up there. I just love the aesthetic (Not of fan of jumping puzzles, but the space walks one of the most sublime moments in any raid.) I mourn the ones that are vaulted. I really liked the Raid Lairs.

You could only power up via powerful engrams, which you got by doing weekly activities, or by doing all the daily activities. There may have been a few others as well. But if you miss a day / week, the opportunity was gone. No matter how much you played, you could not 'catch up' from missing a week.

I still have 2 raids I'm totally blind for. (reply)

I had a group that would do the raids blind even if it took a month or whatever to get to it. That group are still blind too, but the difference is with these last two it's because none of us ever play anymore.

I would have loved to have had a group like that because recruiting for blind raids became increasing difficult as time went on (with the exception of a few stalwarts--thanks to squid for being an anchor! [in a good way]).

I think it was more that I had missed a week, and couldn't get to power level to do the raid blind. Playing it for the first time with a group who had already finished it… it just lost so much of the joy you get when you're figuring it out.

Massive Update (reply)

This certainly seems like a bunch of really positive updates - it's also actually a little comforting that with the freeze on development, there won't be any unwanted changes to worry about in the future.

I am a little concerned that in typical recent Bungie fashion, there will be vast amounts of bugs when this is rolled out and they won't have the resources to fix them.

It also seems like we will be getting some vaulted raid encounters back as part of Pantheon, but if we don't get a full return of Scourge of the Past, that's a real shame. I think Scourge is the best raid they ever made.
